In the early
days of the credit union movement, credit union employees were not
allowed to join the credit union at which they worked. This meant
the people who most believed in the credit union philosophy were
unable to take advantage of the benefits the credit union offered.
In 1936, this situation changed with the chartering of Kansas Federal
Credit Union, whose field of membership included any employee/volunteer
of a credit union or credit union association and members of their
families.
Kansas Federal
Credit Union served in this unique capacity until the late 1970's
when legislation was changed to permit credit union employees/volunteers
to join the credit unions at which they worked or volunteered. Following
this legislative change, Kansas Federal Credit Union changed from
a federal to a state charter, and in 1979, changed its name to Mid
American Credit Union. This change in charter allowed the credit
union to expand its field of membership to include residents of
Kansas and employees of Affiliated Groups.
Because of
the change in charter, employers could affiliate with Mid American
and offer its services as a benefit to their employees. This served
the needs of many employers who were not inclined to form an employee
credit union of their own, but desired their employees to have a
credit union benefit.
Today, Mid
American Credit Union has grown to be a full service financial institution
with assets of more than $121 million. Mid American serves approximately
200 employers in Kansas, and 23,000 members nationwide. Some of
the largest employers in the Wichita area are served by Mid American
Credit Union, including Learjet/Bombardier, Coleman, and Sedgwick
County. Of course, even the smallest companies are able to offer
the benefits of credit union membership to their employees - at
no cost!
Our mission
at Mid American Credit Union is to be the best choice for quality
financial service, above and beyond all other alternatives. Mid
American is dedicated to bringing a full range of convenient, economically
priced financial services to its membership nationwide.
